During the construction of the Sakhalin II oil and gas pipeline, the Shell-led Sakhalin Energy company has seriously damaged a number of salmon spawning rivers, violating its own environmental impact documentation as well as Russian legislation and international standards.

This damage has been well documented but Sakhalin Energy's website claims that "in a few cases the performance and standards are not as we would wish or expect. [...] However, the practices selectively highlighted by NGOs are not representative of the general standard of construction activities along the 800km right of way".

This map shows just how numerous and spread out Sakhalin Energy's "few cases" are. One third of Sakhalin Island's half a million inhabitants rely on fishing for their livelihoods.

Click on the spots along the pipeline route to see how the current construction work is going wrong.

Some of the construction areas are documented by a series of photographs where there is a 5 second delay between images.
